There are a wide range of cross-country skiing opportunities in the Ötztal. Of particular note are the high elevation trails with their guaranteed snow cover.

Cross-country skiing in Sölden in the Tyrol: There are 12 km of trails suitable for skate skiing and for those who prefer the classic style. 

Cross-country skiing in Obergurgl in the Tyrol:
in the higher altitudes of Obergurgl , there are 13 km of trail at 1,930 metres above sea level, with a 2 km practice trail at 2,150 metres above sea level in Hochgurgl.

Cross-country skiing in Niederthai and Längenfeld
By mid-winter, the cross-country ski centres in Niederthai and Längenfeld are in full operation. The 22 km of prepared high trails in Niederthai (skating and classic) are assured of snow cover until Easter because of their elevation (1,600 metres above sea level). The trails pass through woods and over snow-covered meadows where you can enjoy the impressive landscape and natural features of the Ötztal to the full.

A biathlon for amateurs is held every Thursday in Niederthai from 1 pm to 3 pm. Whether beginner or expert - everyone can test their skills and find out what it is like to be a biathlete.

Längenfeld boasts 40 km of prepared cross-country ski trails ranging from easy to moderately difficult, which are also suitable for beginners and families. After dark, there is a floodlit cross-country trail that begins in the immediate vicinity of the Aqua Dome. Cross-country skiing courses are available at both centres, where equipment can also be hired.

The Tyrol state government has devised its 'Tyrol ski trail seal of approval' scheme to promote the quality and safety of ski trails. Many of the trails in Ötztal have been awarded this seal of approval and the corresponding signage is instantly recognisable. The seal of approval provides confirmation of compliance with stringent quality criteria in all of Tyrol's top cross-country skiing regions - covering aspects from trail preparation to optimal skiing infrastructure
